In a turbulent day for Nepal’s capital market, the NEPSE index recorded a significant decline, shedding 47.93 points to settle at 2,954. The drop reflected widespread investor caution, with 226 listed companies seeing a fall in their share prices compared to only 23 gainers. This sharp correction indicates a potential shift in investor sentiment, triggered by market uncertainties and profit-booking pressures.
Despite the decline in the index, trading activity remained remarkably strong. A total of 3.64 crore shares of 327 companies were exchanged, resulting in a staggering turnover exceeding NPR 16.44 billion. Himalayan Reinsurance Limited emerged as the most actively traded stock, registering transactions worth over NPR 1.32 billion. Following closely were Himalayan Distillery and Shivam Cement, with transactions valued at NPR 732.9 million and NPR 573.3 million respectively.
Amid the broader market slump, certain companies delivered exceptional returns to their shareholders. Sanvi Energy led the gainers’ list, with its share price surging by 10%. Trade Tower Nepal followed closely with a gain of 9.99%, while Samata Domestic Microfinance saw an uptick of 6.74%, reflecting investor confidence in niche sector plays and select small-cap stocks.
However, not all investors shared the same fortune. Green Development Bank witnessed the steepest decline of the day, with its stock plunging by 8%. This divergence in performance highlights the increased volatility and sector-specific sensitivity in the current market environment. Investors are advised to remain cautious and conduct thorough research before making new commitments in this fluctuating scenario.
