Dibyashwari Hydropower Limited has made a striking turnaround, slashing its net losses by an impressive 88% in the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year. What was once a company weighed down by mounting financial strain now stands as a case study in strategic discipline and operational refinement. Through targeted cost cutting, disciplined financial management, and revenue optimization, the company has successfully transitioned from crisis mode to a path of calculated recovery.
The unaudited financial report reveals a total revenue of NPR 902 million, marking a 10.95% growth year-over-year. This growth is a reflection of improved generation efficiency and enhanced utilization of infrastructure. Meanwhile, direct costs dropped significantly, from NPR 7.73 million to NPR 5.71 million, indicating stronger control over operational expenses. Administrative costs also declined by over 23%, showing strategic alignment in overhead and resource management.
One of the most notable achievements is in financial cost reduction. The company managed to cut its finance-related expenses from NPR 688 million to NPR 466 million, a 32% drop, easing pressure from debt servicing. These reductions have collectively played a major role in shrinking the company’s net loss from NPR 391 million to just NPR 4.5 million within a year.
However, despite these improvements, Dibyashwari still faces significant structural hurdles. The reserve fund remains deeply negative at NPR 255 million, and the company's total debt exceeds NPR 600 million, with both short-term and long-term liabilities posing a challenge. Moreover, with a liquidity ratio of only 0.18, operational flexibility remains limited. The earnings per share (EPS) is still negative at NPR -1.73, and net worth per share stands at a modest NPR 3.40, reflecting the need for further financial strengthening.
To move forward, the company must focus on liquidity improvement, debt restructuring, and potentially seek capital infusion or equity partnerships. If Dibyashwari can leverage its cost-efficiency momentum and expand its capacity within Nepal’s growing energy sector, it could unlock long-term profitability. While challenges remain, the company’s transformation signals not just survival, but the early stages of a strategic revival.
