NEPSE witnessed a dramatic collapse at the start of the trading week, sending a clear signal of growing uncertainty among investors. On Sunday, the benchmark index nosedived by 65.20 points, closing at 2,857.43, a sharp 2.23% decline that reflects deep-rooted market fragility. The drop was not limited to a few stocks, 233 companies saw their prices fall, while only 16 managed to post gains, painting a grim picture of investor sentiment.
The fall in the Sensitive Index, which represents Class ‘A’ companies, added to the alarm. It dropped by 10.31 points, reaching 490.81, highlighting that even the strongest and most stable firms are not immune to current market pressures. This widespread retreat among blue-chip companies suggests a larger confidence crisis, where investors are pulling out from fundamentally strong stocks amid growing fears of broader economic or regulatory risks.
All 13 sectoral sub-indices closed in the red, signaling a market-wide downturn that offers little to no shelter for investors. The uniformity of the decline indicates that systemic factors, such as shifting investor psychology, macroeconomic concerns, or policy uncertainties, are fueling this mass exodus from equities. Traditional strategies like sector rotation or portfolio diversification provided no cushion against the widespread loss.
Ironically, this market collapse was accompanied by unusually high trading activity. With over NPR 13.07 billion in turnover across more than 152,000 transactions involving 3.22 crore shares, it appears the selloff was not merely panic-driven retail liquidation. Instead, the heavy volume suggests that larger players, possibly institutional investors, are offloading positions, signaling a strategic repositioning rather than short-term emotional reactions.
Despite the turmoil, some experts see potential in the chaos. Sharp corrections often create entry points for long-term investors who can identify undervalued quality stocks dragged down by overall market sentiment. However, for now, NEPSE’s sharp decline serves as a wake-up call, reminding investors of the volatility that can suddenly strike emerging markets and the importance of managing risk even in seemingly calm periods.
