The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) ended the trading week firmly in negative territory, with the benchmark index shedding 72.26 points, or 2.47%, to close at 2,850.37. This marks the second consecutive weekly loss for the market, following a 2.01% drop in the previous week. The decline reflects persistent selling pressure as investor sentiment remains subdued.
Market volatility eased slightly over the week, with the index fluctuating within a 97.02-point range, lower than the 113.32-point volatility recorded in the prior week. However, the softer volatility was overshadowed by a significant contraction in trading activity. Liquidity in the market continued to tighten, adding to the cautious mood among investors.
Turnover for the week fell sharply to Rs. 49.40 billion, a steep 49.02% decline from the preceding week’s Rs. 96.89 billion. In total, 12.86 crore unit shares were traded through 621,768 transactions. The overall market capitalization slipped to Rs. 4.757 trillion, underscoring the broad-based nature of the losses.
The selling pressure was felt across almost every sector, with the Trading Index being the sole gainer, edging up a modest 0.09%. The Others Index suffered the most, tumbling 5.25% over the week. Despite the bearish sentiment, a few stocks managed to shine. Samaj Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Limited (SAMAJ) emerged as the week’s top performer, surging 18.26% to close at Rs. 2,805.53. On the other hand, Sanvi Energy Limited (SANVI) led the losers, plunging 13.28% to settle at Rs. 773.14.
In terms of trading activity, Himalayan Reinsurance Limited (HRL) topped the turnover chart with Rs. 2.18 billion worth of shares changing hands. Among brokerage firms, Naasa Securities Company Limited (Broker No. 58) continued its dominance, leading both the buy and sell sides. The firm purchased stocks worth Rs. 3.09 billion while selling shares totaling Rs. 3.40 billion.
