On Shrawan 25, Kathmandu Valley and Bagmati Province will witness a complete suspension of commercial activities as the nation observes the revered festival of Gai Jatra. The Nepal Stock Exchange, along with banks, financial institutions, and government offices, will close their doors in respect of this important cultural occasion. This pause will reflect Nepal’s commitment to preserving its rich heritage amid ongoing economic modernization.
Gai Jatra will be more than just a festival; it will serve as a sacred journey bridging the realms of life and the afterlife. Families who have lost loved ones during the past year will participate in processions featuring cows or people dressed as cows, symbolically guiding departed souls across the mythical Vaitarani River. Offerings such as milk, fruits, traditional foods, and monetary gifts will be presented as sacred tokens believed to aid the souls’ peaceful passage and honor their memory.
Originating from King Pratap Malla’s compassionate gesture to console his grieving queen, Gai Jatra will continue to evolve as a vibrant cultural event blending mourning with humor, social satire, and theatrical performances. The traditional procession passing through Hanuman Dhoka Palace will maintain this centuries-old practice, connecting the past and present in a profound expression of remembrance and renewal.
This temporary halt in financial activities during Gai Jatra will exemplify Nepal’s remarkable ability to balance cultural reverence with economic progress. When trading floors and institutions reopen, they will not only resume financial transactions but also carry forward a collective spirit enriched by this enduring cultural celebration.
