Upakar Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Limited has staged one of the most remarkable comebacks in Nepal’s microfinance history, transforming from a deep financial loss into a strong profit position within just one fiscal year. From a deficit of NPR 35.1 million in the previous year, the institution has surged to a net profit of NPR 34.2 million, marking a dramatic NPR 69.3 million swing. This turnaround is more than just a financial recovery, it is a testament to resilient leadership, disciplined execution, and strategic restructuring that has redefined the institution’s growth trajectory.
The foundation of this recovery lies in Upakar’s strategic income optimization. Net interest income rose by an impressive 16.82%, reaching NPR 155.3 million compared to NPR 132.9 million a year earlier. Total operating income climbed to NPR 179.4 million, with operating profit hitting NPR 46.5 million. These figures reflect not only improved lending and deposit operations but also enhanced efficiency in cost management, key elements that have powered the institution’s return to profitability.
Upakar’s reserve fund grew by 33.32%, reaching NPR 130.7 million, demonstrating disciplined profit retention and strong capital planning. The allocation of NPR 10.8 million for possible loss provisions shows a cautious and forward-thinking approach to risk management. With deposits now standing at NPR 1.40 billion and loan disbursements at NPR 2.45 billion, the institution has managed to expand its balance sheet while maintaining operational stability.
Despite the remarkable turnaround, Upakar faces a pressing challenge, its non-performing loan (NPL) ratio has risen from 2.13% to 4.85%. While this calls for immediate and strategic credit risk management measures, the institution’s strengthened profitability provides the resources needed to address asset quality concerns without jeopardizing growth momentum. Managing this risk effectively will be crucial for sustaining its recovery.
Upakar Laghubitta’s revival story is a powerful example of what visionary leadership and disciplined execution can achieve, even in the face of adversity. Its strong earnings per share (NPR 32.26) and net worth per share (NPR 190.96) underscore the value created for stakeholders. Moving forward, with a focus on controlling NPLs and maintaining operational efficiency, Upakar is well-positioned to solidify its place as one of Nepal’s leading microfinance success stories.
