Buddha Bhumi Nepal Hydropower Company Limited is staring down a financial abyss as its fourth-quarter report reveals a staggering 51% surge in losses, reaching NPR 22.5 million. This alarming deterioration underscores critical operational and financial weaknesses that threaten the company's viability in Nepal’s highly competitive hydropower sector. Despite increasing national electricity demand, Buddha Bhumi’s revenue fell from NPR 148.8 million to NPR 143.7 million.
Cost pressures have intensified the crisis, with total expenses ballooning by 15.8% from NPR 62.7 million to NPR 72.6 million. This steep rise in spending, coupled with a decline in revenue, has created a crushing profit squeeze. Even though the company managed to slightly reduce financial costs by NPR 8.1 million, lowering its debt servicing obligations to NPR 87.5 million, this was not nearly enough to counterbalance the broader operational shortfalls.
Perhaps most distressing is the state of the company’s balance sheet. With negative retained earnings of NPR 104.7 million against a paid-up capital of NPR 400 million, Buddha Bhumi has eroded over a quarter of its equity base. This severe capital impairment is mirrored in its catastrophic liquidity ratio of just 0.43%, indicating a potential inability to meet short-term liabilities and suggesting a looming risk of operational disruptions or insolvency.
Moreover, the company’s poor asset utilization, evident from its NPR 341.64 total asset per share figure generating negative profitability, highlights deep-rooted inefficiencies. In contrast to other successful hydropower firms delivering healthy returns, Buddha Bhumi’s underperformance suggests shortcomings in technology, site selection, or management capability. With shareholder value evaporating, earnings per share sitting at a distressing negative NPR 5.65 and net worth per share slumping to NPR 77.14, the company's future hangs in the balance.
