Finance Minister Assures Rigorous Multi-Generational Background Checks for SEBON and Insurance Authority Chiefs

Finance Minister Assures Rigorous Multi-Generational Background Checks for SEBON and Insurance Authority Chiefs

Finance Minister Dr. Swarnima Wagle has stated that the appointments of new chairpersons at the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON) and the Nepal Insurance Authority will be finalized only after exhaustive, multi-generational background checks. Speaking at an event organized by the Nepal Chamber of Commerce in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Minister Wagle emphasized the government's commitment to clean governance, ensuring that only individuals with unblemished integrity are selected to lead these crucial financial regulatory bodies. Addressing the prolonged vacancy at SEBON, Minister Wagle disclosed that the government has already narrowed down its selection to a specific candidate. However, the official appointment has been intentionally paused to accommodate a meticulous vetting process that extends well beyond standard professional references. "We have already chosen a person for the SEBON chairperson post," Minister Wagle remarked. "But we are working to appoint him only after thoroughly studying and examining his background, his past activities, and his connections going back ten generations." The Finance Minister assured market participants that this same level of intense scrutiny would be applied to the upcoming appointment at the Nepal Insurance Authority. Both institutions have been operating without permanent heads, a leadership vacuum that has sparked growing concern among investors and industry stakeholders over delayed regulatory policies and market stagnation. Minister Wagle reiterated that while the delay has caused anxiety, the government will not compromise on its vetting standards, promising that the "right person" with absolute transparency will ultimately be brought in to steady the market.
