U.S. President Donald Trump has postponed a planned 50% tariff increase on Canadian goods for three days, citing progress in bilateral negotiations and an agreement to finalize key documents.

Trump Delays 50% Tariff Hike on Canadian Goods for Three Days

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a three-day delay in the planned 50% tariff hike on Canadian goods, which was scheduled to take effect at midnight, after the two countries reported significant progress in trade negotiations. Trump said the delay would allow both sides to finalize the necessary documents. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also acknowledged progress but said several important issues remain unresolved. The proposed agreement covers greater market access for U.S. products, economic security commitments, digital trade protections, and concerns over Canadian dairy, alcohol, and automobile markets. Discussions are also underway over reducing the 25% tariff on Canadian vehicles to 15%, depending on the share of U.S. content used in the vehicles. If implemented, the new tariffs could have affected around $20 billion worth of Canadian imports and placed additional pressure on industries such as lumber, wine, dairy, and automobiles. Canada has reportedly prepared measures to support affected industries and other possible responses if the tariff increase ultimately takes effect.
