Nepal Targets 95% Electric Vehicles by 2035 Under NDC 3.0 Plan

The government has set a target to make 95 percent of private vehicles electric by 2035 under its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0, aiming to accelerate Nepal’s transition to clean mobility. The plan also includes major investments in public transport, rail networks, and charging infrastructure.

Nepal Targets 95% Electric Vehicles by 2035 Under NDC 3.0 Plan

The government has set an ambitious target to achieve 95 percent electric vehicle (EV) adoption in private two- and four-wheelers by 2035 under its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0, which was approved by the Cabinet on May 14. The plan also aims for 90 percent electrification of commercial public transport, as part of Nepal’s broader climate commitment. Currently, EVs account for 12.38 percent of the vehicle market. However, the government estimates that achieving the 2035 target will require an investment of around $9.2 billion. Despite this, concerns remain over policy inconsistencies, as EV-related taxes have recently been increased, which critics say may contradict the country’s clean energy goals.
