Technology-Driven Traffic Monitoring Leads to Action Against Over 38,000 Drivers in Kathmandu

The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office has intensified its enforcement of traffic rules through the use of CCTV cameras and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, taking action against 38,778 drivers over the past year. According to the office, enhanced technology-based monitoring has significantly increased the detection of traffic violations. Spokesperson and Deputy Superintendent of Police Nareshraj Subedi said the cameras are capable of identifying drivers who fail to wear seatbelts, use mobile phones while driving, smoke behind the wheel, or commit other traffic offenses, enabling authorities to take legal action based on recorded evidence. Traffic police said the technology has also made it easier to identify drivers who flee after causing accidents or violating traffic rules. Between Baishakh 2082 and Asar 20, 2083, authorities prosecuted 15,954 drivers through ANPR cameras and 22,824 drivers using CCTV surveillance. Senior Superintendent of Police Suresh Prasad Kafle, chief of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, said modern technology has significantly improved both traffic management and accident investigations by recording vehicle number plates and other identifying details, allowing police to trace vehicle owners and initiate legal action even if the driver escapes the scene.
