NEA Launches Eastern Nepal Power Inspection After Outage Complaints

The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has initiated a high-level field inspection of electricity infrastructure and distribution systems in Morang and Sunsari to address persistent power outages and voltage fluctuations affecting eastern Nepal. The move comes after Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha directed the authority to take immediate measures in response to growing public complaints, particularly from Biratnagar and surrounding areas. A team led by Acting Executive Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha and Deputy Executive Director Rajan Dhakal visited the region to assess the current state of electricity supply and hold discussions with provincial and distribution office chiefs on operational challenges and possible solutions. The inspection also covered the transformer repair workshop and the Duhabi Substation, where officials instructed teams to accelerate necessary maintenance and upgrade work. The authority has also directed contractors to complete the construction of the 132 kV Barju Substation in Sunsari within three months and the Kerung Substation in Morang within one month, describing both projects as strategically important for strengthening the regional power network. According to the NEA, inspections of other electricity projects and distribution offices in eastern Nepal are ongoing, with employees instructed to improve coordination and service delivery to ensure a more reliable, efficient, and sustainable electricity supply.
