Trump Imposes New Tariffs on 60 Trade Partners Over Forced Labor Concerns

Trump Imposes New Tariffs on 60 Trade Partners Over Forced Labor Concerns

The United States has imposed new import tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5% on goods from 60 major trading partners, including the United Kingdom, China, India, Japan, Canada, and the European Union. Introduced under President Donald Trump's directive, the new duties took effect on Friday and replace the temporary 10% tariff previously in place. According to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, countries that have taken credible steps to prevent forced labor in their supply chains will face a 10% tariff, while those deemed to have made insufficient progress will be subject to a 12.5% rate. The policy has been implemented under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 and is aimed at addressing human rights concerns and unfair trade practices. The move has sparked criticism from several affected countries. Brazil called the decision "unfair" and warned of possible retaliatory measures, while Japan and Australia expressed disappointment over the tariffs. China rejected the forced labor allegations as politically motivated. Economists have cautioned that the new tariffs could increase costs for U.S. businesses and consumers, while encouraging affected countries to diversify their trade partnerships. The Trump administration is also reviewing additional countries for possible future tariff measures, signaling continued pressure on global supply chains.
