Kathmandu Inundation Alert: KMC Identifies 128 Monsoon Hotspots as 8,000+ Families Face Flood Risk

As part of its proactive disaster management strategy, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has approved a targeted pre-monsoon preparedness and response plan following weather forecasts from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. Chief of the KMC Disaster Management Department, Anirudha Nepal, announced that 128 flood-prone sites have been identified, putting an estimated 8,315 families in jeopardy. Ward 14, situated near the low-lying confluence of the Bagmati and Bishnumati rivers, faces the highest overall threat, while Ward 30 holds the highest concentration of danger zones with 21 specific risk sites. In terms of population impact, Ward 16 is expected to hit the hardest, risking 1,600 families due to swelling streams in Samakhushi and Bishnumati, followed closely by thousands of vulnerable households in Wards 26, 3, and 4. To mitigate the impending fallout during the rainy season, the metropolis has designated 87 schools, 51 parks, and 28 open spaces to serve as emergency shelters for displaced residents.
