Nepal Misses Power Generation Target, Adds Only 561 MW in FY 2025/26

Nepal fell short of its electricity generation target in the last fiscal year, adding only 561 MW against the planned 942 MW due to floods, landslides, and construction delays.

Nepal Misses Power Generation Target, Adds Only 561 MW in FY 2025/26

Nepal failed to meet its electricity generation target in the fiscal year 2082/83 (2025/26), adding only 561 MW to the national grid against the government's target of 942 MW. According to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), 25 new projects—including 23 hydropower plants and two solar projects—began commercial operation during the year, increasing the country's total installed capacity to around 4,300 MW. The 102 MW Mid Bhotekoshi Hydropower Project was the largest project commissioned during the period. Officials attributed the shortfall to monsoon-induced floods and landslides, which damaged construction sites and delayed project implementation, as well as shortages of key construction materials and transportation disruptions. Despite missing the target, the newly commissioned projects have strengthened Nepal's energy sector, with expectations that continued investment in transmission infrastructure will support higher domestic consumption and electricity exports in the coming years.
