Russian Missile Strike Kills Eight in Kyiv Ahead of NATO Summit

At least eight people were killed and more than 30 injured after Russia launched a fresh ballistic missile attack on Ukraine's Kyiv region early Monday, according to Ukrainian authorities. The overnight assault, the second major strike on Kyiv in less than a week, triggered multiple explosions and fires in residential buildings as air defense systems intercepted incoming missiles. Ukrainian officials said seven people were killed in Kyiv and one in the Bucha district, while at least 34 others were injured. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to remain in shelters as air defense units responded to the attack. The latest escalation comes just a day before a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, where efforts to end the more than four-year war are expected to dominate discussions. The renewed violence follows weeks of intensified cross-border strikes by both Russia and Ukraine, including attacks on energy infrastructure and military facilities. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during the summit before holding separate talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin as part of renewed diplomatic efforts to revive stalled peace negotiations. Despite the diplomatic push, fierce fighting continues in eastern Ukraine, with President Zelensky warning that Russia could launch further large-scale attacks during the summit.
