Shifting from Remittances to IT: Finance Minister Dr. Wagle Outlines Nepal’s New Economic Blueprint

Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle declared that the government is steering the country away from a two-decade reliance on foreign remittances, prioritizing digital infrastructure, e-governance, and clean energy instead. Speaking at the Nepal Business Summit, he promised a highly reform-oriented upcoming budget designed to foster private enterprise and secure a long-term "governance dividend" for the public.

Shifting from Remittances to IT: Finance Minister Dr. Wagle Outlines Nepal’s New Economic Blueprint

Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle conceded that decades of poor governance have exacted a steep economic price from Nepali society, a cycle the current administration intends to break through massive institutional cleansing. To deliver a genuine "governance dividend," the ministry is spearheading an aggressive regulatory overhaul that includes amending dozens of outdated financial and administrative acts to eliminate red tape. This legislative modernization aims to build a highly predictable, secure climate for private-sector investment. Dr. Wagle emphasized that public capital alone cannot fund the nation's massive infrastructure deficit, calling on both domestic businesses and the global Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) network to step up as active partners in funding major connectivity projects.
