Nepal Unveils New National Transport Policy to Modernize Mobility

The Government of Nepal has approved the National Transport Policy 2083, replacing the 2008 policy with a comprehensive roadmap to make the country's transport system safer, smarter and more sustainable. Endorsed by the Cabinet on Asar 24, 2083 BS, the policy seeks to address rising road accidents, traffic congestion, vehicle emissions and high transportation costs through modern infrastructure and technology. The policy introduces the Safe System Approach to improve road safety by strengthening road design, vehicle standards and emergency response. It also prioritizes the expansion of electric vehicles through nationwide charging stations, green transport corridors and financial incentives. In addition, the government plans to develop mass transit systems such as metro rail and bus rapid transit, fully digitize transport services, improve freight logistics and promote multimodal connectivity by integrating road, rail, air and inland waterways. Officials believe the policy will play a key role in creating a safer, more efficient and environmentally friendly transport network while supporting Nepal's long-term economic growth.
